Auto Insurance Claims

If you are involved in an auto accident, you should take the following steps at the scene of the accident to ensure your safety and to minimize complications with your claim.

  1. Call 911 if someone has a serious injury. Notify the police of the accident as soon as possible.
  2. Exchange contact information, license plate numbers, and auto insurance information with the other parties involved.
  3. Look for witnesses who will be willing explain the incident and obtain their contact information as well.
  4. If an accident happens inside a parking lot, an officer may say that they do not have jurisdiction. Insist on an incident report.
  5. Contact your insurance company as soon as possible. You can call the 800 number listed on this page or click on the link for the company. If you call our office during business hours, we can help you file the claim.
  6. If the other party is at fault, you can file a claim with their insurance company. This will prevent you from paying your deductible with your carrier and then waiting to get a reimbursement for it.
  7. You will receive a phone call from the other party’s insurance company asking for your version of the events that led to the accident. It’s a good idea to write down exactly what you tell each carrier just in case there is a lawsuit. Your explanation should be consistent.
